Non-Mandatory Additional Learning

Non-Mandatory Additional Learning offers optional modules for healthcare professionals who want to go beyond minimum compliance and build broader skills in inclusion, communication, leadership and quality improvement. These courses help teams provide more person-centredequitable care and support service development alongside day-to-day clinical work.

All Non-Mandatory Additional Learning Courses

Autism Awareness

Improve communication and care by understanding autism and making reasonable adjustments in primary care.

Estimated duration: 1 hour

Who should complete Non-Mandatory Additional Learning?

  • Clinicians and non-clinical staff who want to deepen their understanding of specific topics, such as autism, communication or health inequalities.
  • Managers, team leads and quality-improvement leads working on culture, inclusion and service development.
  • Staff preparing for new responsibilities, leadership roles or portfolio development.
  • Anyone who wants to enhance patient experience and team culture beyond core statutory or role-specific requirements.

Why Non-Mandatory Additional Learning matters in UK healthcare

  • Supports better patient experience, especially for people with additional needs or from underserved groups (for example autistic patients or those facing barriers to access).
  • Helps organisations build a more inclusive, person-centred culture that aligns with NHS priorities around equality, diversity and health inequalities.
  • Provides practical skills that can be applied in service improvement projects, supervision discussions and appraisals.

How Non-Mandatory Additional Learning works

  • Additional Learning modules are delivered online in short, focused sessions that combine clear explanations with real-life patient care scenarios.
  • Content is designed to be reflective and practical, encouraging staff to think about how they interact with patients and colleagues.
  • At the end of each module, learners complete a brief quiz or case-based assessment to check understanding.
  • Passing the assessment unlocks an eGPHub certificate; learners can revisit content and re-take the quiz if they need to improve their score.

Certificates and Proof of Training

Each Additional Learning module provides an eGPHub certificate on completion. Certificates can be added to CPD records, appraisals and revalidation portfolios as evidence of reflective learning.

How often should Additional Learning be refreshed?

There is no fixed national refresh schedule for Additional Learning modules. Many organisations encourage staff to revisit key topics every 2–3 years, or sooner if their role changes or new guidance is released. Practices can also use these modules flexibly as part of quality-improvement plans, supervision cycles or personal development objectives.
